Conductivity and Litmus Lab Test each of the solutions with red and blue litmus paper. Test for conductivity using the conductivity testers. Make sure to rinse the conductivity testerwith water between each test. On your lab sheet classify each compound as an acid, base, salt or non-acid. Tidy up the station before moving on.
Name Conductivity Litmus Classification 1. KI 2. CsOH 3. H2S Potassium Iodide Yes Neutral Salt Cesium hydroxide Yes Blue Base Hydrosulphuric acid Yes Red Acid
Check your results- they should look like the table below. metals nonmetals Salts Bases Acids Nonacids Mg(NO3)2Ba(OH)2H2SO4Br2 CaCl2NH4OHHCH3COO C2H4 KI KOHH2C2O4CH3CH2OH K2Cr2O7RbOHHNO3HOH NaCl NaOHH3PO4CH3OH Na2SO4Ca(OH)2HClO4C3H6O NH4Cl C3H7OH
Describe how you would classify each type of compound by inspecting the formula. Consider if the compound starts with a metal or nonmetal as well as what it ends with. Starts Ends Salts Bases Acids Nonacids metal or NH4+ anything but OH- metal or NH4+ OH- H+(exception HOH) whatever whatever nonmetal
