Story Elements • Plot: two teen boys who are “Greasers” run away after one of them stabs a “Soc” after they are attacked • Conflict: there are two opposing teen groups • Characters: Ponyboy, Darry, Soda, Johnny, Dally, other Greasers, Soc members • Setting: Tulsa, Oklahoma in the late sixties • Theme: family and friends can get you through the worst of times; you can’t run away from your problems; life is tough, yet life goes on; look beyond the outside and see the person within

people Ponyboy is the narrator, and is fourteen. Sodapop is Ponyboy’s middle brother, and is 16. Darry is 20, and is the oldest brother of Ponyboy and Sodapop Two-bits’s name is Keith and at 18 is still a high school junior. He is the comic of the group. Steve is Soda’s best friend and works in the gas station with Soda. Johnny is the favorite of the group, hangs out with Ponyboy, and considers Dally his hero. Dally is the toughest one, having already been to Jail at 17.

even more slang • square: someone who was not "Cool“ • steady: boyfriend or girlfriend • stuck up: conceited • “the most“: something that is the best or the greatest • thicker than a $5.00 malt: someone that's not too bright--back then, malts were only 30 cents! • think fast: it usually was used to tell you to get ready because someone was tossing you something. • thongs: in the 60's, thongs were something you wore on your feet • threads: clothes • tooling: to cruise or drive around without aim • tough or tuff: neat, cherry • wedgie: when someone pulls your underwear up from the back and it ends up in the crack all on it's own--now they call it a thong and wear them on purpose • “what's Your bag, man?”: what's your problem • wicked: term of admiration • zits: pimples
