What is an FBA Chapter? • A group of students or youth interested in the home building industry, typically attending: • High-school • Vocational school • Academy • College
What is an FBA Chapter? (cont’d) • FBA chapters give students interested in the home building industry a place to learn a skilled trade or general construction in the field and with the help of those in the industry. • Chapters are sponsored by their local HBA, HBA member(s) and the school or academy of which they attend.
What is an FBA Chapter? (cont’d) • FBA chapters • Provide direction andcareer path opportunities • Teach leadership andteamwork skills • Train students to runmeetings using parlia-mentary procedure • Give students an identity • FBA chapters statewide will meet for competition and camaraderie
Who Qualifies? • Any educational entity with a desire and ability to educate students under the age of 25 on Residential Construction. • The local HBA must be willing to support their mission. • Local HBA members must be willing to participate.
What is Our Goal? • Help develop a skilled and responsible workforce. • Encourage and support the implementation of comprehensive, hands-on construction programs in schools that extend the classroom setting into the field. • Assist FHBA members and local HBAs in providing future job superintendents and construction management to their members.
How Does Local HBA Fit In? • Program Advisor(s): • HBA Members • HBA Staff • Educational entity’sconstruction staff • Administrative Support • Job Placement • Qualified students • Builders willing to mentor new hires
How Do We Get Started? • Introduce concept to HBA • Introduce concept to school • Submit application to Foundation • Plan school year program • Hold student meeting
How Do We Get Started? (cont’d) • Introduce FBA to HBA • Board of Directors • General Membership • Assign a committee • Education • Ad hoc – FBA Comm. • Maintain contact with FHB Foundation
How Do We Get Started? (cont’d) • Introduce FBA to School • Identify the Industrial/Technical Supervisor for school district • Identify schools with construction programs • Identify teachers and school administrators • Invite FHB Foundation • Secure buy-in and committee members • Complete the application together
How Do We Get Started? (cont’d) • Appoint new chapter officers (1st year) • Local HBA members • School staff • Submit to FBHA Foundation: • Application for each Chapter • Charter By-laws • Sponsors • Begin local implementation planning
How Do We Get Started? (cont’d) • Adopt school year plan – bring on the students • Identify student officers to be appointed by the sponsors • Adopt new by-laws providing for student leadership and future elections • FBHA Foundation will review all applications for approval
How Do We Ensure Success? • Success is almost already ensured with willing participants • HBA staff must be willing to commit time and support to the Chapter • HBA members must be willing to commit time and resources (financial and in-kind), too • School district and school personnel must be partners
How Do We Ensure Success? (cont’d) • Maintain contact with the FHB Foundation representatives • Use Chapter template as a programming guide: • Chapter day meetings • Field trips • Job placement and mentoring • Build a home**
Programs • School curriculum and FBAactivities should complementeach other • Curriculum and chapteractivities should relateto actual construction jobs incommunity • As the school year progresses, the FBA members learn in the classroom the stages of construction.
Programs(cont’d) • Chapter activities should track the progress of a home under construction to be visited on field trips • Use blueprints in the classroom of future sites to be visited • Monthly Chapter meetings will include guest speakers who worked on the home • Field trips will visit the home under construction
Programs(cont’d) • By the end of school year, FBA members will see completed home • Last month of the school year, look at the permitting process for next year’s home • Additional field trips may include visiting SEBC and IBS
Programs(cont’d) • Hold a job fair to illustrate the wide array of career choices available • Mentoring and job placement programs are essential to the student success • The ultimate goal is to provide opportunities to interested, educated students
