Traditional Databases • Fact: There are HUNDREDS of databases for you to explore! • Databases usually center around a subject. • Think about what subjects touch upon your research • The Marriott Library Website (www.lib.utah.edu) has a subject-oriented list of their databases. • Also, there are the databases and fulltext databases pages on the Eccles Library Website at library.med.utah.edu. • And remember, PubMed and CINAHL

  4. Example Information Need • How do new quadriplegics adapt to using assisted technology? • What subjects are covered in this topic? • What databases would we use?

  5. Grey Literature • What is it? • Publications that are made available through non-traditional sources • Non-profit organizations’ research • Government reports • Conference proceedings • Corporate technical reports • Theses/Dissertations • Big volume; difficult to collectively quantify.

Some Grey Literature Sources • NYAM Grey Literature Report • http://www.nyam.org/library/pages/grey_literature_report • Extensive list of NPOs, plus govt. agencies • Searchable • National Technical Information Service • Use Eccles Library link from databases page (UofU users only) or fedworld.gov • reports, databases; fee-based. Can use as an index, then find items through other sources.

  7. Grey Literature Sources • Science.gov • Subject-oriented gateway • Searchable • Draws upon many federal govt. sources • STINET • http://stinet.dtic.mil/ • Access declassified research • Oddly enough, it includes a lot of health stuff • Freely access items that are fee-based through NTIS

  8. Grey Literature Sources • Institutional Repositories • Can search through http://www.opendoar.org/search.php • Includes much traditional materials. • ERIC • http://www.eric.ed.gov/ • Education focus (DOE resource) • Includes ERIC reports in addition to journal article citations
