  2. HEALTH • Health is defined as a state of total well-being. • While heredity and the environment are factors in your overall health, your personal health is influenced by the choices and decisions you make.

  3. What does personal health affect? Personal health can affect everything about you: • Looks • How you feel • How you act • Attitudes toward school, work and play • Your relationships • Helps you determine your goals

  4. The Three Elements of Health • Physical • Mental • Social

  5. Physical Health • All body parts and systems of the body work well together • Your body is able to handle everyday stress • You have enough strength and energy to get through the day

  6. Mental Health • How you like, accept and feel about yourself • How you relate to others • How you meet the demands of the day • You are able to express your emotions in an acceptable manner.

  7. Social Health • How well you get along with others • How you make and keep friends • How you communicate and share your feelings

  8. WELLNESS Wellness is your overall state of well-being or total health. It is how you live each day. Wellness includes physical, mental and emotional health.

  9. LIFESTYLE FACTORS Lifestyle factors are activities you can do or avoid that will make your life better. • Sleep 7 to 8 hours a night • Eat three balance meals at regular times • Do not smoke • Eat breakfast • Exercise at least 30 to 40 minutes 3 to 4 times a week • Do not drink alcohol • Watch your weight

  11. Factors That Influence How Long A Person Will Live • Gender • Heredity • Environment • Culture • Access to medical health • Basic health habits

  12. Life Expectancy of Us Citizens • 1900 = 47 • 1910 = 50 • 1920 = 54 • 1930 = 59 • In the past the leading causes of death were communicable diseases like pneumonia, flu, tuberculosis and polio

  13. 1980 = 74 • 1990 = 75 • 2000 = 77 • Today Males = 78 Females = 81 Today the leading causes of death are due to lifestyle choices – heart disease, cancer, strokes and accidents.

  14. The leading causes of death for 15 to 24 year olds are: • Injury • Murder • Suicide • Cancer

  15. Quality of Life Quality of life is the level of wellness and satisfaction a person has in being alive. In other words you are living a happy and healthy life This is obtained by practicing healthy habits to stay disease free.
