Measure and visualize air flow velocity profiles in empty wind tunnel and that behind wind turbines • Find out mechanical power extracted from the wind turbine • Measure the maximum electrical power output at a series of wind speeds • Develop a power curve for the wind turbine system • Calculate and compare the overall efficiency for three turbines with different designs of blades Objectives
Methodology DC motor Tubercle Wind Inlet Slotted Traverse arm Straight Wind turbine with three different designs of blades are used for the measurement and comparison. The measurement is processed in a low turbulence wind tunnel with measurement tools installed in test section. Hot wire sensor support
Results & Conclusion • Overall efficiencies of for the three different blade design turbines are: ηstraight =20.6%; ηtubercle =17.6%; ηslotted =26.7%; • At lower range velocities, slotted design blades can generate most electrical power and tubercle blades generate least power.
