DEFINITION • Set of practices for IT Service Management (ITSM) • Aligning IT Services with the needs of business • ITIL describes processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists that are not organization-specific used by organization for establishing integration with organization’s strategy, delivering value and maintaining a minimum level of competency
HISTORY • 1980s : Need of ITIL emerged Established earliest version of ITIL called GITIM (Government Information Technology Infrastructure Management) • 1990s : Used in both government and non- government • 2000 : Microsoft used ITIL to develop Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) • 2001 : Version 2 of ITIL released • 2007 : Version 3 of ITIL released

DEFINITION • Created by ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) • Best Practices for Information Technology management and IT Governance • Supporting toolset that allows manager to bride the gap between control requirements, technical issues and business risks • Provide management and business processes owners with an IT governance model that helps delivering value from IT and managing the risks of it
HISTORY • 1996 : ISACA released a set of control objectives for business applications, first edition of COBIT • 1998 : Second Version released Implementation tool set and high level detailed control objectives • 2000 : Third Version released Management Guidelines • 2002 : Uptake COBIT in the United States
