  1. Scope and aims of the project “This project is scheduled to run from 15th December 1998 until the end of October 1999. It follows the successful completion of the first Pilot, PIPVIC. The aim of this project is to undertake piloting activities in order to gain a greater understanding of the issues which may be encountered in running a large scale IP videoconferencing service. It is a UKERNA funded project, and forms a core part of the UKERNA videoconferencing strategy. The project is coordinated and led by University College London, the principal investigator being Dr. Angela Sasse, and there are 12 other Higher Education Institution partner sites also involved.” Primarily interested in teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate) and academic research activities within the UK.

Types of session (by situation) • Desktop point to point (usually NetMeeting, sometimes IETF protocols) • Desktop multi-site multicast (IETF protocols) • Lecture/Seminar (room), typically w/ local audience, plus multicast to desktops • Multi-site lectures/rooms - difficult! usually no echo- cancelling available. Aberystwyth trialling a low-cost (~GBP300) echo-canceller

  3. Summing Up • The project is ongoing. Some delays due to core network reconfiguration, but project due to complete in October’99. • Wide range of applications, from medical teaching to Russian language tutorials to robotics seminar… • Unfortunate loss of face with some users who needed/ expected a more consistent and reliable service. • But overall seems to be successful, is stimulating interesting uses of the available tools, we’re learning useful techniques, and it’s offering very worthwhile low-cost functionality. • BUT standard H.323 not deployed yet, little experience with it or interworking with NetMeeting, unlikely to happen within the timeframe.
