Small Sewing Equipment A. CUTTING EQUIPMENT –(scissors family, keep equipment sharp, do not use for paper) 1. Shears – Cutting out fabric – long blades, bent or straight handles – bent handles improve accuracy of cutting 2. Seam Ripper – hook-like point – cutting & removing stitches
Small Sewing Equipment B. MEASURING EQUIPMENT – (measure pattern, fabric and garment pieces accurately) 1. Tape Measure – narrow strip durable plastic – marked with inches and centimeters 2. Measuring Stick – yardstick – measuring on flat surface – smooth edge to prevent snags 3. Seam Gauge – slide marker for specific lengths – button holes, hems and seams
Small Sewing Equipment C. MARKING EQUIPMENT – (transfer important markings to fabric) 1. Tracing Wheel and Paper – transfer pattern markings to wrong side of fabric 2. Tailor’s Chalk – pencils, squares or wheels of chalk or wax (used for wool)
Small Sewing Equipment D. PRESSING EQUIPMENT – (gives cloth a neat crisp appearance) 1. Iron and Ironing Board – steam iron & padded board for pressing fabric, seams & hems 2. Press Cloth – placed between fabric & iron to keep dark fabrics from developing a shine
Small Sewing Equipment E. OTHER SMALL EQUIPMENT 1. Hand Sewing Needles – very thick (1) to very fine (12) – medium (sharps) best for hand * 2. Machine Needles – United States & European – lightweight = 10, medium weight = 14, heavyweight = 18 3. Straight Pins – hold pattern to fabric, hold pieces together, sharp pins for woven, ballpoint for knit 4. Pincushion – keeps pins handy while working 5. Thimble – protects fingers while hand sewing – worn on third finger of hand holding needle *Ball point needles have rounded points which separate the knit while you sew *Ball pins are best for knit fabrics as the plastic ball keeps the pin in place
1 2 4 3 5 Ball Pins Sharp or silk pins
Review Vocabulary • Right side – bright side of fabric – the outside of the project • Wrong side – dull side of fabric – the inside of the project • Seam – created when two pieces of fabric are sewn with the right sides together • Hem – a finish technique where fabric is folded under and stitched in place • Backstitch –reverse stitching ½ inch at the beginning and end of a line of stitching to secure threads • Pivot – Turning directions during stitching – the needle stays planted, lift the presser foot and turn the fabric.
Sewing Machine Parts 1. Hand Wheel – controls up & down movement of needle 2. Thread take-up Lever – feeds thread from the spool to the needle 3. Throat Plate – metal plate under the needle, contains seam allowance markings 4. Bobbin – small, flat spool that holds the bottom thread
Sewing Machine Parts 5. Bobbin Case – holds the bobbin, found under throat plate, some are removable 6. Bobbin Winder Spindle – holds bobbin while thread is wound from the spool to bobbin 7. Feed Dogs – tooth-like surface that moves fabric during stitching 8. Presser Foot – holds the fabric in place against the feed dogs during stitching
Sewing Machine Parts 9. Presser Foot Lifter / Presser Foot Take up bar – raises and lowers the presser foot 10. Tension Control – adjusts tightness and looseness of the upper thread 11. Stitch Length Control – adjusts stitches from short to long 12. Stitch Width Control – adjusts width of stitch when using zigzag or patterns
Sewing Machine Parts 13. Stitch Pattern Control – adjusted to make different decorative stitches 14. Reverse Button – allows you to stitch backwards to secure the end of a seam 15. Spool Pin – holds the spool of thread during sewing 16. Thread Guides – hold the upper thread in place as it moves through the machine 17. Foot Control / Foot Pedal – regulates the starting, stopping and speed of the machine
