Other Responsibilities • Meetings with community groups/leaders • Mandated region meetings with WBL • Phone calls, emails, etc. • Planning/Coordinating/Executing all WBL and career related planning for CHS • Coordinating YouScience School wide • Coordinating GA Best advisement school wide • Coordinating CTAE end of pathway testing • Coordinating Breakfast of Champions monthly • Building and maintaining all club activities for FBLA (officer meetings, state meetings, chapter meetings, all field trips, money collection, competitions, etc.) • Coordinating Mock Interview Day • Arranging job shadow placements • Coordinating large company orientations (CMC) • Serving on the Chatt Tech Advisory Committee

  7. Keeping BOB title • Priorities • 1. Academic Grades – Let’s get you on to greener pastures! • 2. WBL Work – Remember the whole reason you are leaving early is because you are in a CLASS that allows it… Keeping up with Class work and obligations is how to keep the privilege • 2.2 Career Planning- Identifying your greener pastures and letting me help you achieve the dream! • 3. Jobsite Performance- includes communication with jobsite about your priorities. I can help you do this.

And for the win… Communication • I can help only what I KNOW • I am your ONLY source of proven accurate info in WBL (someone said, they said, she/he said –they don’t exist) • I am busy like you, which is why I need CONSIDERATION of my schedule • SO DO YOUR: • Teachers • Counselors • Supervisors • Parents

Communication – BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE- Relationship Build • Initiate contact when there is an issue • Control the perception of who you are… (see currency on why this matters) • Use email wisely • Use socials wisely • Leave detailed messages • Remember the 5 W’s and H as a potential solution • People love potential solutions • Remind teachers of what’s going on with you. Try as hard as you wish they would to get to know your stakeholders (same goes for supervisor)

What SHOULD You communicate with me about? • I am sick and will not be at school/work • I have an issue with my co-worker, job, supervisor • I have an issue with transportation • I am asking permission to stay on campus for a test, quiz, etc. instead of leaving immediately • I am checking out early • I have a college day scheduled • I will be absent for ___days and I know this in advance • I got a job offer for a different job • I am thinking about quitting • I got fired

What could you communicate with me about? • I don’t understand the assignment • I am having a hard time in one of my other classes • My boss at work doesn’t understand scheduling me around WBL hours • I am having an issue with another student at school or a coworker at work • My family is going through something and it is affecting my ability to perform well • I got a scholarship • I got accepted! • I got a prom date! : )

  13. #6 Organization • Hard calendar – Why? • Backing up dates • Size matters • Lose something small? • Won’t carry something big? • Don’t want to carry another bag? • Phone sounds like a good plan, but do you use it? • Use it WISELY… Do you know how? I can help. • AVOID GETTING OVERWHELMED!

Organization best practices • Use info from all of your classes and write down important deadlines • THEN set your own deadlines to meet for the same assignments – Write these down • Try to get a set schedule for work if possible • If you carry your life in a car, at least put it all in a bin of some kind • Put all graded work in your binders when you get it back and immediately. YOU MUST HAVE THIS to get FULL CREDIT

  15. WBL (Work based learning) Portfolio You are responsible for keeping this up-to-date. Watch out for spot checks! • Each student will create a 2-inch presentation style notebook • This will be the manual for this course • It will have ALL of your assignments for the entire year… and is due at the end of the course What if I lose it? Don’t!

Portfolio • Keep portfolios up-to-date, neat and organized • If myself or personnel from the central office come to your work site, you must be able to show them your portfolio on the spot. • Remember, building a portfolio is the only way we can document that you have earned course credit. • It will also become a valuable tool you can use for job interviews, college scholarship applications and interviews & college interviews.

  19. #7 Design everything you do with the end in mind • Get what you want by giving what they need • Think about what the other person may want before you approach with what you want • Teacher example • Employer example • Currency in Work/School Relationships • Cold Hard Cash/paycheck/bonuses/letters of recommendations/long term jobs/scholarships • Grades/Letters of Recommendations/ nominations/contacts for career • Don’t complicate your own life. Do it right the first time. Save it where you can easily find it. You are BUSY- don’t waste your own time.

  20. Consistent Formatting • Each assignment will have a consistent format. You will need to insert a HEADER • You will need to use a Microsoft Endorsed Program such as Office 365 or Microsoft Word • You may not use Google Docs • Insert a HEADER into each document that you produce online • First and Last Name – TAB • Name of the Assignment – TAB • Month the work is FOR Don’t worry!

  22. Where are the assignments? • WBL NOTEBOOK: • All assignments will be found at the following website: • Canestocareers.com • This orientation presentation will be posted to the website for a review any time that you need it.

  23. Assignments for your portfolio • All assignments will be online for you to access! • You will simply refer to the QUICK GUIDE for each month. Complete the items on it and turn it in. • Most assignments will be turned in hard-copy but will be designated in the quickguide.

  25. Think about me every day… • Sick? • Email me ASAP but especially before I know you leave (I.E. Before lunch or your WBL period) • EMAIL – documents it and helps us both • May also Text me on REMIND • Checking out? See above • Suddenly sick at work and need to leave? See above

  26. Attendance • Sign in OR out each day Where: Room 101 You will be marked absent for ALL WBL periods if you do not sign out Do NOT sign for anyone except yourself If I am off campus, the clipboard will be placed outside my room or a location designated.

  27. ATTENDANCE cont. • It is imperative that you are on your jobsite for 55 minutes per release period. • Less time will affect your grade • Travel time, or stopping for food, gas, etc. does NOT count. Keep me posted as to any UNIQUE schedules!

ATTENDANCE…cont. • Communicate with me!!! • If you are absent CALL your supervisor AND me. • (Each absence in which you do not call is docked up to 20 points/day) • IF you check out you will be counted absent for the following periods unless you check back in. • Grading: If you leave me a message that you are going to be absent, it is still recorded as an absence, but the sign out sheet is not docked the 20 points/day) Call EACH day you are absent.

Attendance • All students will turn in a timesheet signed by me, your mentor, and your parent • If you are off, write “off” • If you are not scheduled to work, you must leave campus… IF there is something special going on, talk to me. • Have your mentor or an “approved” person sign/initial your time sheet daily • When you sign out, you are responsible for being where you are supposed to be

ATTENDANCE cont. • When you are sign out, you are responsible for being where you are supposed to be • If you are not reporting to your work location, it is considered skipping • If you are not prepared to consider this as a true career opportunity, please sign up for a different course • If you need to see me, please come during your internship, not during another class.

  31. Attendance • FAB Weds. – EVERYONE required to stay on campus for STUDYHALL/Advisement • Juniors- MUST go to study hall and lunch every day. May not leave during lunch to start WBL job • PT DUAL Enrollment- Must stay on campus for Study Hall/Advisement • FAB and Failing (not so fab) – What do I do? And what if it is WBL?

  32. Daily procedures Learn and Be Awesome! • Sign out in Room 101 • Check for Messages, reminders, notes or handouts on CLIPBOARD< EMAIL < REMIND • Go To Work • Keep up with your WBL Portfolio

  36. #1. Weekly Production Reports • Log your time at work EACH DAY • This acts as a time card • Have your mentor sign Weekly • Turn it in each following Tuesday • If your mentor is not available, have an adult who worked with you sign your form-PRINT THEIR NAME AS WELL (under it, near it, etc.) • You will print these for yourself. • I will sign/verify it ever Tuesday and you will turn in every other Tuesday.

  37. Grade checks • I will check all of your grades weekly and you will earn a WEEKLY WORK ETHICS GRADE. The criteria for this is in your student/parent handbook. • If you are at a 72 or lower- EMAIL to you, your parent, and said teacher. • YOU MUST REPLY ALL------ Professional content • Identify Strategies • WHY??????? • Design with the end in mind • Currency • Seems like you are on top of it and you care • Keeps you accountable and the grade in the forefront of your mind • Keeps us from making FAB Mandatory for WBL

FAB Questions • Can you leave after study hall if it backs up to your WBL period? • Do you have to stay for FAB if failing? • Can I come back on campus if I leave? • What do I do for Ms. B if I am on campus for FAB? • Who do I turn in my FAB forms to if I am on campus for FAB? • Do I have to stay for advisement if I am a Senior?

Keeping FAB FABULOUS • My WBL meetings will be once per month on FAB Weds afternoons • Notify me immediately if a teacher has required you to attend a specific section- this isn’t allowed • You have advance notice of my meetings so it takes priority. See me with questions. • Failing? Can’t make it to FAB because of WORK? You need to attend study hall in the next 5 days and bring me proof. (That’s the deal I struck to keep you from mandatory FAB, sorry)

Study hall (Jrs and Srs) • Junior • Yes, you have to go to study hall every day • Yes, if your job schedule is proven you can leave during study hall (NOT LUNCH) if it backs up to your WBL period • Yes, you have to go to lunch every day • Senior • No, you do not have to go to study hall –only on FAB • Yes, you can leave for lunch • Yes, you have to come back if you have a period in between lunch and WBL

  41. Monthly procedures • At the end of each month, you will turn in hard copies of your assignments. • You will scan your work and then place the hard copies in your folder within Ms. Boyer’s classroom. • This work will be hand graded and returned to you for corrections. • Monthly Assignments will include: • Work Journals/Summary of Activities • Evaluations • A monthly Portfolio Assignment • DO NOT THROW AWAY GRADED WORK – EVER (you will need it again)

  42. First day of school until… • Report to the media center EVERY DAY until you are released to leave You are required to be at school for until I have released you– No Exceptions! STUDENTS will NOT be allowed to leave campus early until these items are complete
