  2. England and Scotland in 1500’s • Both Separate Kingdoms • England and Scotland both had their own Kings and Queens • Both also had their own allies. • Sometimes they didn’t get on and were rivals

  3. Scotland is very mountainous • It is a proud nation and likes its independence and is always suspicious of the English. • Elizabeth’s uncle is King in Scotland which gives it a link with England.

  4. Mary Queen of Scots • Elizabeth and Mary were COUSINS • If Elizabeth had no children and died- Mary was actually heir to the throne of England! • HOWEVER • Mary was a Catholic. • This was a Problem? - England could becomeCATHOLICagain.

  5. Marriage 1 • Mary’s first husband was Francis II of France. • He died very young and she returned to Scotland. • Better to be Queen of Scotland than an ex-Queen of France. • But Scotland is now mainly Protestant.

  6. Marriage 2 Lord Darnley become Mary’s second Husband. They marry in secret. Scottish Lords do not like it - he and Mary are Catholics.

Prisoner Mary has to flee Scotland and goes to England – BUT this is a problem!! • Why not send Mary back to Scotland? • Mary may be put to Death. • Set free in England? • No - she claimed the English Throne. • Catholics were plotting to replace Elizabeth with Mary. • Mary was held prisoner for 19 years.

  15. The Babington Plot Agents 1570 Pope Made it possible for Mary to write to her friends. Told Catholics it was OK to get rid of Elizabeth. Walsingham Elizabeth’s Chief Minister Babington Plot Letters Babington was a Catholic who plotted to kill Elizabeth and make Mary Queen. Mary agreed to it. Mary wrote in secret code but Walsingham knew what she was writing!!
