This preliminary survey provides an introduction to the tourist systems of Istria, including information on the region's geography, tourist arrivals and overnight stays, cultural heritage, environmental impact, and protected areas. The survey also explores the potential for participative environmental management in Istria and local residents' attitudes towards conservation.

Introduction to the Region • The Istrian Region includes a large part of Istria - the largest Adriatic peninsula • Most of the Croatian part of the peninsula is situated in the Istrian Region - 2.820 square kilometres, which is 4,98 % of the entire surfaceofthe Republic of Croatia • The length of the Istrian coast, along with islands and islets is 539 kilometers. The west coast of Istria is more indented, and, together with islands, it is 327 kilometers long. East coast, together with islets, is 212 kilometers long • 10 towns and 31 municipalities

LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION PAs MONITORING & POLICY • MONITORING: • Monitoring and recording the number of visitors on an annual basis only exists in NP BrijuniandPIKamenjak(2 outof 34 PAs) • 2014data: 102.000 vehiclesduringthesummerseason (cca 250.000 annualy) POLICY: 1 out of 34 PAs has Management plan! LEGISLATION: Law on Nature Protection (Official Gazettes, 80/13)– defines management programs for protected areas whithin all permitted and prohibited activities must be defined

LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION The study on participativeenvironmental management inIstriaandlocalresident’s attitudestowardsconservation • 6 PAs examined • Questionnaire survey • Face-to face and phone interviews • Residents in and around PAs (24% of the total Istrian population) • Questionnaire: 13 open-ended and close-ended questions Idea and conclusions: The results presented in this paper support the idea of participative conservation models for PA managers and additionally serve to illustrate possible directions for nature protection in Istria, Croatia and neighboring countries.
