Introduction to the Region • The Istrian Region includes a large part of Istria - the largest Adriatic peninsula • Most of the Croatian part of the peninsula is situated in the Istrian Region - 2.820 square kilometres, which is 4,98 % of the entire surfaceofthe Republic of Croatia • The length of the Istrian coast, along with islands and islets is 539 kilometers. The west coast of Istria is more indented, and, together with islands, it is 327 kilometers long. East coast, together with islets, is 212 kilometers long • 10 towns and 31 municipalities

Introduction to the Region Introduction to the Region GDP of travel related revenues in Croatia: 15,5% (in 2012) and 16,5% (preliminary data in 2013) Total resident population 4.284.889 (Croatia), 208.055 (cca. 5% Istria County) in 2011 Annual tourist arrivals 12.441.476 (Croatia), 2.980.663 (cca. 24% Istria County) in 2013 Annual tourist overnight stays 64.827.814 (Croatia), 19.445.130 (cca. 30% Istria County) in 2013 Workers employed in hotels and restourants(6,3% of total, employed in crafts and trades and free lances: 16,8% of total- in 2013 in Croatia – in Istria County in 2012. =11,81%) Accommodation capacities: (2013) number of beds 249.861 (Istria) 925.773 (Croatia); number of beds in hotels 31.375 (Istria) 131.004 (Croatia)

LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION ENVIRONMENTAL COMPONENT OF ISTRIAN TOURISM PROTECTED AREAS IN ISTRIA (Croatia) • 34 PAs in the IstrianCounty • Protection categories: • national park • special reserve • nature park • significant landscape • nature monumentpark • forest and park architecture monument • PAs cover about9 % of the Istrian County and PI Natura Histrica managesabout 8 % of the total area (source: Natura Histrica 2014). • Istrian County: 252.000 ha • PA: 21.004,71ha • Coastal PA: 17.294,81 ha

LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION PAs MONITORING & POLICY • MONITORING: • Monitoring and recording the number of visitors on an annual basis only exists in NP BrijuniandPIKamenjak(2 outof 34 PAs) • 2014data: 102.000 vehiclesduringthesummerseason (cca 250.000 annualy) POLICY: 1 out of 34 PAs has Management plan! LEGISLATION: Law on Nature Protection (Official Gazettes, 80/13)– defines management programs for protected areas whithin all permitted and prohibited activities must be defined

  9. LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION PAs MONITORING & POLICY • Croatia: 780 NATURA 2000 sites • Istria: 22 PAs are in NATURA 2000 • Management plans for NATURA 2000 sitesin Istria are stillnot done.

LANDSCAPE AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION The study on participativeenvironmental management inIstriaandlocalresident’s attitudestowardsconservation • 6 PAs examined • Questionnaire survey • Face-to face and phone interviews • Residents in and around PAs (24% of the total Istrian population) • Questionnaire: 13 open-ended and close-ended questions Idea and conclusions: The results presented in this paper support the idea of participative conservation models for PA managers and additionally serve to illustrate possible directions for nature protection in Istria, Croatia and neighboring countries.
