  4. Definition Of A Scheme • A scheme is a plan, program, purpose for attaining something. • Is this word used in the Bible?

  5. Is This Word Used In The Bible? • Ephesians 4:14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. • Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. • Psalm 33:11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.

  6. Definition Of Redemption • To buy back. • To set free by paying the ransom. • To deliver from sin and its penalties, as by a sacrifice for the sinner. • To make amends or atone for.

Strong’s Dictionary • 3084 λυτρόω [lutroo /loo·tro·o/] v. • 1 to release on receipt of ransom. • 2 to redeem, liberate by payment of ransom. • 2a to liberate. • 2b to cause to be released to one’s self by payment of a ransom. • 2c to redeem. • 2d to deliver: from evils of every kind, internal and externalv v: verb

  8. Is The Word Used In The Bible? • Luke 1:68 “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people,… • Luke 24:21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. • Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),…

  9. Is The Word Used In The Bible? • Galatians 4:5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. • Ephesians 5:16redeeming the time, because the days are evil. • Colossians 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. • Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

  10. Is The Word Used In The Bible? • 1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,… • Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,…

  11. God’s Plan For Redeeming Man • Ephesians 3:9-11 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; 10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, 11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  12. Man Is Finite, God Is Infinite • Jeremiah 10:23 O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. • Isaiah 55:8-9 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

  13. Man Is Finite, God Is Infinite • Mark 10:27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “with men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” • Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. • Job 38:11 When I said, ‘This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!

  14. Time –Man and God • Ephesians 5:15-16 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. • 2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. • Isaiah 57:15 For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

  15. Beginning And End Of Time • Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. • Genesis 1:14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;… • 2 Peter 3:10-11 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,…

  16. When Did God Design This Plan? • Ephesians 3:11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,… • Hebrews 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,…

  17. Can We Know This Plan? • Ephesians 3:2 if indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you,… • Ephesians 3:4-5 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets:… • Ephesians 3:9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;…

  18. To Understand A Plan, We Must Understand or comprehend the entire plan. “In order to understand fully and perfectly any one part or element of a system, it is necessary to have, in the first place, a general and comprehensive knowledge of the whole. The several elements must be viewed and considered in their relations to each other and to the whole scheme or system of which they are the component and constituent parts” (Milligan, page 11).

  19. Psalm 139:17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! how great is the sum of them! • 2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

  20. Sometimes we just don’t see the connections between all these various kinds of books, and many assume there is no connection to be seen. Learning to See the Bible as a Whole The Bible is a collection — even a confusing collection — of many kinds of books. • poetry • history • genealogy • apocalyptic literature • stories about great people • stories about wicked people • letters • law • wisdom

  21. The Bible is meant to be read as a single book.

  22. Learning to See the Bible as a Whole Because the same God wrote it all. If we recognize unity in the books written by single human authors, how much more should we see it in the book God has written. After all, God wrote the Bible for us to read, and He wrote it in a way we can readily understand (by assuming its unity and continuity).

  23. Learning to See the Bible as a Whole The Bible’s claim to be the word of God. • 1 Cor 2:10-13 • Eph 3:1-4 • Jer 1:4-10; 36:32 • Exod 34:27f • Deut 5:22

  24. Learning to See the Bible as a Whole Because of the presence of the promise theme This promise and its fulfillment constitutes the theme of the Bible and gives it an organic unity that is nothing short of remarkable.

  25. Learning to See the Bible as a Whole Because of the presence of typology The existence of typology implies a sovereign God who orchestrates all things and imposes a unity on history. It means that history has a divine goal and purpose.

  26. Learning to See the Bible as a Whole Because that is the way the early Christians read and understood the Bible • The massive number of quotations from and allusions to the OT in the NT shows us very clearly that the early Christians believed and understood that there was an unbroken progression from the OT to Christianity. • There is a fundamental continuity that cannot be denied. • Matt 1:22f; 2:15-23; 8:16f; 12:15-20 • John 19:24-28, 36f • Acts 1:16, 20; 2:16; 3:18; 13:27ff
