3. Challenges You Face…
4. Conflicting Information from Media Media is doom and gloom
As of Sept. 24th, the S&P 500 was +10% for the last 12 months, according to Yahoo! Finance.
In 2002, Merrill Lynch ran a campaign with Steve Martin touting the importance of fixed income in portfolios.
They were not preaching that from 2000-2002.

directly into an index. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
5. There is no “One Size Fits All” What Do You Want?
What Do You Need to Do to Get It?
Running Numbers Will Help You Back into Required Savings or Returns
6. The Human Mind Is Funny Question…
Some months have 30 days, some months have 31, which has 28 days?
Answer…
All of them!
7. The Human Mind Is Funny Banana Story
We’re conditioned to take certain things as fact.
Like…
If you’re a long-term investor, stay the course.
What goes down will come up.
But…
How do they know how you are invested?
How do they know if you’re on the right course?
8. Impact of Loss on Portfolio
9. Buckets of Money 1-5 Years
5-10 Years
10+ Years
Keep 3-5 years in Cash
Efficient cash and alternatives, conservative growth, moderate growth
10. Question…What is your hedge or exit strategy?
11. Hedge & Exit Strategy “I hold bonds to protect me if stocks go down.”
How did that work for you in 2007-2009?
No one can control the stock market but we can attempt to manage the risk.
We are “Risk Managers” and we plan for downturns.
If they happen, we were ready. If the markets go straight up, we are still in a position to make money.
12. Hedge & Exit Strategy Seat Belts and Airbags
Seat Belt = Well diversified portfolio
Airbag = Guarantees of future income or principal
If you’re going to drive your car slow, there is less need to drive the car with the airbags. Seat belt may be OK.
If you’re going to drive your car fast, make sure you are driving the car with the both seat belts & airbags.
You will certainly pay more for a car that has an airbag.
13. Designing your Portfolio to Potentially Minimize Loss
1. Have an independent third party put your portfolio under a “stress test.”
2. Are you taking more risk than is necessary?
3. Are your current holdings suitable for your situation and goals?
4. Do you know how much you are paying in fees & taxes?
