  1. Waste Minimisation‘Tips of the Trade’ Emma Burlow15th September 2004

  2. Objectives • To understand the true cost of waste • To identify opportunities and quick wins • To get your waste minimisation and recycling programme moving with simple communication tools • Where to get more help

  3. What is waste minimisation? • Reduction of waste at source • Reduction in the hazardous nature of waste • It is NOT external re-use/recycling, (part of waste management) • Includes water, energy, time – all resources • Less waste = more profit

  4. The Waste Hierarchy Highest Priority • Elimination • Source reduction • Re-use • Recycling • Treatment & disposal Lowest Priority

  5. Making the Business Case – The Bottom Line Turnover £500,000 Profit (@approx 10%) £50,000 Energy/Waste Cost (@ approx 4% of T/O) £20,000 Savings potential (approx 20%) £4,000 Represents increase in profit of 8% Equivalent turnover increase £40,000

  6. The industrial office • Quality and Customer Satisfaction are ‘buzz’ words • Initiative fatigue • Blue Frighteners / White Folders • Staff keep head down • Tied up capacity • Short term goals • Mountains of waste

  7. The evolved office • Ecosystem view • The right information in – the right solution out • Cyclical – comes back round • Staff rewarded for their input • Flexible capacity • Long term goals • Nothing is wasted

  8. MUDA • Muda = waste, purposelessness and futility • Identify this in your workplace e.g. • Time • Paperwork • Human resource • Storage space

  9. The 5 Whys • Ask the 5 whys to determine the underlying cause of the MUDA • Ask the actual people doing the job down the chain • E.g. Bad coffee / triplicate!

  10. Mapping – A Day in the Life of the Office • ½ hour brainstorm • Visual • What happens • Who is involved • What the Muda is • Suggestions for improving your day

  11. Who is responsible? • Cleaning? • Waste collection ? • Recycling ? • Communication? • Purchasing? • Buildings?

  12. Innovate "Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons."Popular Mechanics, forecasting the relentless march of science, 1949

  13. Where to put the effort • Which wastes are easiest to eliminate or reduce? • Which will need more work? • Who do we need to help? • How do you compare with other offices?

  14. Benchmark : Office • Uses approximately 7 reams of paper per person per year • Recycles 100% of all paper • Produces around 200kg of waste per staff member per year • Achieves an overall recycling rate of 60-70% • Uses approximately 7.7m3 (7,700 litres) of water per person per year

  15. Tips for Success • Networks vs hierarchies • Dispel myths and reinforce wins • Inclusion and encouragement • Patience and perseverance • Innovate and use humour • Reward the activists • Use a consistent approach

  16. Quick win tips • Buy a scanner • Remove the bins • Buy drinking glasses and mugs • Reward staff with instant savings • Ban printing of email • Join the Mayors Green Procurement Code • Stationery amnesty • Centralise purchasing

  17. Linking • Link environmental initiatives to others to give them more weight E.g. Recycling – donations to favourite charity Cycle to work day – to health promotion Green Purchasing – to cost reduction exercise

  18. Cracking the Hard Nuts • Water torture - drip feed • Convince the unconvincable • Reward the quick joiners • Concentrate on small victories • 7 steps to selling • Revert to trickery…..

  19. What do you stand to gain? • Well motivated staff • Better morale • Charity donations • Improved PR • Supply chain improvement • Cost savings • Space savings

  20. Summary of Envirowise Assistance • Environment and Energy Helpline 0800 585794 • Free site visits (waste min) • Free Publications • Workshops & seminars
