  3. What you need to know about the2011-12 Course Selection Process • Re-designed to be more of a collaborative effort between STUDENTS, PARENTS and the SCHOOL • it needs to be connected to a 3-year graduation plan • its an online selection process

Every year we have a number of student who carefully consider what courses they plan to take the next year. • They consider factors like: • where their strengths are • what they would like to get better at • their career goals • post secondary admission requirements • graduation requirements • and these students typically get the courses they need/want and are on a straight line path to achieving their goals for their life after KAL • these are students who are able to find relevance in their courses and are able to stay motivated during the difficult times 3 Year PlanConnections

HOWEVER… • We have many students who make course selections "on the spot" with only a passing thought as to how their course selections are connected to their future • Unfortunately these are the students who find it difficult to stay motivated and focused with a learning task ( or course) and often are heard to say..with frustration "WHERE AM I EVER GOING TO USE THIS...." 3 Year PlanConnections

  12. It's Online • Using the web portal of students will be able to select courses accurate and quickly • The web portal will allow families to review and confirm the courses selected my their child(ren)

Do I need a 2nd language? • There are many advantages of having a 2nd language • A second language is notrequired for graduation • 2nd language to grade 11may be required for BC University entrance* only • UBC-Vancouver • UVIC Arts (*UVIC Science does not require 2nd language) • SFU • Most Apprenticeships, Trade Programs do not require 2nd language

What about Elective Courses?Higher level skills essential to workplace success Employers are looking for people who are creative and who are able to think critically, solve problems, communicate well, conceptualize, make decisions and learn and reason. The sought after worker is a continuous and highly adaptable learner, and an imaginative thinker who possesses a wide range of higher level thinking skills. Arts education can help students develop and reinforce these essential higher level skills. "In its Employability Skills Profile, the Conference Board of Canada identified the most desirable employment skills in the Canadian workforce. They included the ability to communicate, think, learn for life, work well with others, adapt and be creative”
