Existentialism Synthesis Essay Creating a POV
The task In an essay synthesize at least three sources to develop and defend a point of view that evaluates Existentialism as a world view. Your three sources should include: • The Stranger • One document I provided • One document you provided
To evaluate… to determine the significance, worth, or condition of by careful appraisal and study * In order to do this you must: 1. Establish a set of criteria by which you will judge the object of your study. 2. Determine the extent to which the object of your study meets those criteria. *(FROM MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY)
Requirements for POV Your POV should: • Recognize the complexity of the issue. • Imply a set of criteria you used to evaluate Existentialism as a worldview. • Suggest a structure or POT you will follow to defend your position.
POV A: While Existentialism may be too morbid for some in its focus on the inevitability of death, its value as a philosophy comes from its commitment to experiencing the world truthfully instead of cobbling together a comfort based on self-deception. POV B: As a worldview Existentialism is intellectually lazy, espousing the defeatist belief that life's difficult questions are unanswerable rather than inspiring its adherents to struggle to make sense of a mysterious world. QUESTIONS: 1. What are the criteria for a good worldview implied by each of the two POV’s above? 2. How would each of these two responses be structured?
Your Turn 1. Spend the remainder of the period developing a strong POV and a logical POT. 2. Once you have done that, begin thinking about how you will synthesize the documents to create your argument.
