  2. What is a Non-GovernmentalOrganization (NGO)? “Private organizations that pursue activities to relieve suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide basic social services, or undertake community development" -The World Bank

  3. Characteristics of an NGO • Not for profit “charity” groups • Funded by governments, multilateral organizations (i.e. United Nations), foundations and individual donors • Often pursuing one of the following goals: • Engaging in emergency relief work • Promoting the interests of the poor • Protecting the environment • Providing basic social services • Advocating for community development

Canadian NGOs working in International Development: An Example Founded in 1984, Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) is a Toronto-based NGO that is inspired by the vision of a healthy planet, where health is broadly defined to include human well-being, environmental integrity and social justice.

  6. What Does CPAR Do? CPAR works with rural communities in the following areas: • Clean water and sanitation • Food security • Primary health care • Secure livelihoods • Environment
