Boyle’s Law. Pressure and Volume. Pressure. Pressure = Force / Area SI unit = Pa = 1N/m 2 kPa= 1000 Pa Pressure of a gas is determined by the kinetic motions of its molecules (each collision exerts a force on the container). 760 mm Hg = 760 torr = 1 atm = 101.3 kPa = 14.7 psi.

Boyle’s Law Pressure and Volume
Pressure • Pressure = Force / Area • SI unit = Pa = 1N/m2 • kPa= 1000 Pa • Pressure of a gas is determined by the kinetic motions of its molecules (each collision exerts a force on the container) 760 mm Hg = 760 torr = 1 atm = 101.3 kPa = 14.7 psi STP: O°C and 1 atm (101.3 kPa) SATP:25°C and 100 kPa
Barometer Animation Boyle's Law Activity
Boyle’s Law • As pressure on a gas increases, the volume of the gas decreases proportionally, if temperature and amount of gas (moles) remain constant.
Pressure & Volume • Atoms inside constantly colliding inside walls = exerting pressure • As atmospheric pressure decreases, there are fewer air molecules to collide with on the outside • So as pressure decreases outside, the inside expands
