The history of Cobalt • Discovered by George Brandt in 1735 in Sweden • Name comes from the German word “kobald” meaning evil spirit • Cobalt salts are used to color glass a deep blue color • Minerals containing cobalt were of value to the early civilizations of Egypt for coloring glass deep blue.
Uses for Cobalt • Cobalt is used to color glass blue • It is the only metal that is found in vitamins • It is the critical component in the vitamin B12 • Its also used for Y rays because its high energy radiation is useful for sterilization in medicine and of foods
Biological effects of aluminum • Injections of large numbers of cobalt lead to acute inflammation and necrosis, followed by a chronic inflammatory response • Animals seem to not really be affected by it • It is proven that it could be toxic in humans if used on an implant • It’s a non-combustible solid, except as dust
