Our aims … • To raise awareness of ERP and food security • To form a network of schools in Wales linked with a similar network in Zanzibar • To develop and trial resources looking at the issues connected with ERP • To disseminate information throughout Wales and with European partners
Aim 1: to raise awareness of the value of ERP in food security • What would you do tomorrow if you didn’t have to go to school? • What would you be doing tomorrow if you’d never been to school? • What do you want to be doing in 10 years? • What would you be doing in 10 years time if you’d never been to school?
Aim 2: to form a network of schools in Wales linked to a similar network in Zanzibar
Split site school of 1470 pupils aged 11-18 on the outskirts of Merthyr Tydfil. • Location of school on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. • Main activities in rural areas are hill sheep farming and the growth of the tourism industry via diversification. • ERP resources integrated across the curriculum with particular reference to Geography, P.S.E and R.E. • Issues discussed include aid, trade and sustainable tourism.
Cardinal Newman Catholic School • 780 pupils on one site. • Located on the outskirts of Pontypridd. • Historically a coal mining area surrounded by upland sheep farming. • Rural area diversifying and environmental improvements on derelict industrial land. • ERP project includes RE, civics and democracy. • Partners in France, Italy, Germany, Poland & Uganda: represented UK in Brussels in the 2003 Commenius Conference. • Winners of French “Le defis de la paix” democracy competition 2005. • Represented Wales in Berlin 2005 in a conference commemoration the fall of the Berlin wall.
Sir Thomas Picton High School • School on the outskirts of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. • Catchment area in low land pastoral, market gardening and cereal farming. • Intense diversification into the tourism industry of Pembrokeshire including national attractions such as educational farms and quad-biking centres. • Existing link with Zanzibar, peer support for teachers. • PSE lessons dealing with childrens rights, sustainable tourism, water supply and demand as a global topic.
