  1. CHAPTER I (Part I): INTRODUCTION TO LIMNOLOGY ECOLOGICAL EMPHASIS Environmentalism and Science The Seven Perspectives of Ecology.

  2. LIMNOLOGY Limnology is the oceanography of lakes (Forel 1892)… Forel, F.A. 1892-1901 Le Léman: monographie limnologique Editions Rouges & Cie, Lausanne. the study of inland waters (1922) International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology 1922

  3. Limnology is: … "the study of inland waters, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams, and wetlands as systems. … a multidisciplinary field that involves all sciences that can be brought to bear on understanding the nature of such waters: the physical, chemical, earth, and biological sciences, and mathematics". Edmondson, 1994

  4. François Alphonse Forel (complements of the Institut F.-A. Forel).

  5. Map of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), Switzerland (Forel 1892)

  6. Professor W.T. Edmondson on Lake Washington, Seattle.

  7. Daphnia, the water flea, from Swammerdam (1669). (Tommy Edmondson admired this image for two reasons. Logo of a cleaning product “Old Dutch Cleanser”: “Chases Dirt”. The multiple claws resemble the multiple images used by Duchamp to indicate movement in his 1912 “Nude Descending a Staircase” –240 years ahead of its time.)

  8. A. The first graph of temperature versus lake depth. (de Fischer-Foster, and Brunner. 1849). B. University of Wisconsin Limnology Class data, summer, 1995.

  9. Professor G. Evelyn Hutchinson at Yale, with a tortoise and a piece of Coral.

  10. Limnological Measuring Units cm, mm, µm, m ha liter, cubic meter, cc, cm3, ml g, kg sec

  11. NAMES OF LAKES What is the difference between a lake and a pond?

  12. LAKE: Relative large body of water, typically deeper than 3 meters, with an area of greater than about 1-10 ha. Often shows thermal stratification. Shallow water bodies can be called shallow lakes if they are large.

  13. Lake Mendota, Madison, WI

  14. Dove Lake, Tasmania

  15. Crater Lake, Oregon

  16. Boiling Lake, Dominica

  17. Lake Mendota, WI
