Why did the first colonists come to America? • Puritan • The Puritans fled England in search of religious freedom. • The Puritans were Christians who were unhappy with the changes in the Church of England and wanted to purify it. • They were persecuted for their beliefs in England and eventually settled in New England, including Massachusetts Bay.
Puritan Beliefs • The Puritans of Salem believed in strict interpretation of the Bible. • They were also superstitious and believed that witches and demons could do evil works through human beings. • They believed that human beings were inherently sinful and corrupt and had to live according to strict interpretation of the Bible.
