  1. Salem Witch Trials: A look into the hysteria.

  2. Lesson Objectives • Students will recognize how to research secondary sources in order to compare them to possible primary sources. • Selection of key events relating to the area of study will be given to the students in order for them to dissect the information and give opinions upon what they have learned, and how it affects them. (Related to skills needed for DSTP.) • Students will learn how to use technology in a respectful manner, and how to enhance their learning output by using the tools available for them to complete their task.

  3. Students will Understand: • In 17th-century New England, people were persecuted for allegedly practicing witchcraft. • Students will look into the allegation and offer alternatives to witchcraft to explain the people’s behavior. • Arthur Miller wrote the play The Crucible, using the 17th-century case of witch trials (and fictionalizing it) to comment on a 20th-century phenomenon-the hunting of communists as if they were witches. • They will learn to serf the internet and view the site: Witchcraft Hysteria: Salem, at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/features/97/salem/. • How to use the internet and programs to make an interactive, and educational web-adventure that pertains to life in Salem during the 17th-century.

  4. Alterations and Loti • Students will use laptop computer labs to build a web-adventure. • Students will surf the internet to research primary and secondary documents pertaining to the subject. • The students will present their web-adventures to the class by the end of the unit. • Loti Level 2/3

  5. Advantages of Alterations • Students will gain experience in using the internet to collect historical data specific to the Salem Witch Trials. • There will also be specific web-sites that students must visit to read instructions. • Students will work with web-adventures, which will help them to learn how to use specific computer tools and programs.
