  2. Plot: A Definition • Plot: the structure and relationship of actions and events in a work of fiction

  3. Plot Diagram • Plot is usually illustrated with a triangle/mountain image.

  4. Plot Points • The five plot points on a plot diagram occur in the order that follows: • Exposition • Rising Action • Climax • Falling Action • Denouement/Resolution

  5. Exposition • The exposition introduces the characters, background, and setting. • Protagonist: main character, often hero of the story • Antagonist: character against the protagonist, often villain of the story • Setting: the place and time that a story takes place

  6. Conflict • Conflict: struggle between opposing forces. • Man vs. Man • Man vs. Nature • Man vs. Society • Man vs. Self

  7. Rising Action • Rising action: events which lead to the climax of the story

  8. Climax • Climax: the highest point of action in the story

  9. Falling Action • Falling action: events in the story that lead to the end of the conflict.

  10. Denouement/Resolution • Denouement/Resolution: the end of the conflict
