Principles of Design How you use the Elements of Art
Why do we need to know these? • If the principles are not used correctly people know the art work does not look good. • We want our art to appeal to a wide range of people and show our ability to make art well. • This takes the physical Elements of Art and makes them work together so that they are pleasing to ourselves and the viewer.
Balance Equal visual weight
Balance • Visual weight refers to the distribution of the Elements of Art in the artwork. • There are three types of balance • Formal/ Symmetrical • Informal/ Asymmetrical • Radial
Formal / Symmetrical This means that the Elements of Art are distributed the same or approximately the same on both sides of an axis.
Informal / Asymmetrical This means that the Elements of Art are distributed differently on both sides of an axis.
Radial This means that the Elements of Art are distributed around a central location in a circular format.
Match the picture with the type of Balance and tell why it’s that type. 1 2

Variety / Contrast This means that the Elements of Art are changed in different areas of an artwork.
