Introduction • I am doing Sports in Mexico because I am a health and physical education major and sports are of interest to me. • I am going to research and explain what kind of sports they play in Mexico and what are their most popular.
Most Popular • Soccer is the most popular among the Mexico population. • Soccer can paralyze the country. • This happens when two rivals play each other, it usually brings in people from all cities. • Known as futbol in Mexico
Bullfighting • Also known as “fiesta brava” • Been popular in Mexico for over 400 years. • A fight includes; • Rodeos • Pig chases • Dances • These are the start of the main bullfighting event.
Charreada • Charreada, or Mexican rodeo is a popular sport. • A display of costumes and stunts, with Mariachis providing the entertainment. • Tequila and beer are served to the spectators. • Male and Female charros (rodeo particpants) • They wear boots and somberos (wide-brimmed)
Olympics • Mexico hosted the Olympics in 1968 • First Spanish speaking country to do so • Mexico received three gold medals, three silver and three bronze • The games are remembered for the quality of the design and advertising. • Considered to be the best Olympic identities every designed.
Olympic Fact • Choosing Mexico as the Olympic host was a controversy. • One reason because of it’s high altitude. • Proved an advantage in explosive events, such as short-distance running, jumping, throwing and weightlifting. • Proved disastrous for endurance type events.
Baseball • Mexican Baseball League • Summer league • Teams across Mexico • Considered AAA (minor league) • Founded in 1925, included six teams • Reorganized in 1955 and became Class AA and once more in 1967 and attained class AAA • Now composed of 16 teams (divided to north and south leagues)
Basketball • The Tijuana Dragons are a basketball team • ABA (American Basketball Association) • Began play in 2004 • Finished 2005 season with a 10-16 record and a 7th place finish • Most notable for having former NBA all-star Dennis Rodman on their team
