Valves of the Heart Reid, Alex F, Alex D, Raven, Grace
Types of Valves • Atrioventricular • Tricuspid • Bicuspid/Mitral • Semilunar • Aortic • Pulmonary
Tricuspid • Location: Between the right atrium and right ventricle • Shape: 3 flaps, tendon mediated • Function: Allows blood into the right ventricle while preventing backflow of blood into the atrium.
Bicuspid/Mitral • Location: Between the left ventricle and the left atrium • Shape: 2 flaps, tendon mediated • Function: Allows blood into the left ventricle while preventing backflow of blood into the atrium.
Aortic • Location: Between the left ventricle and the aorta. • Shape: 3 flaps, pressure mediated • Function: Allows blood to pass from left ventricle to all tissues of the body, prevents backflow of blood into the ventricles.
Pulmonary • Location: Between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery • Shape: 3 flaps, pressure mediated • Function: Allows blood to pass from the right ventricle to the lungs, prevents backflow of blood into the ventricles.
