Digital Personal Trainer Adam Axelrod Tony Brown Tim Finley Chris Newman Ben Tedesco
Presentation • Requirements and Intended Users • User Tasks • Demonstration of DPT • Development process • Revisions • Conclusions and Future Work
Requirements • Users desire the following capabilities: • Easy logging facility for their workout • Pre-programmed routine based on preferences • Statistical results of their workouts • Feedback from workout routines for modification
Intended Users • Experience Level • Any amount of workout experience • Age / Gender • 18 and older • Intended for men and women
User Tasks • Create a new user profile (new users) • Create a goal and indicate target muscle • Create a workout (blank or by preferences) • Log workout results • Modify existing workout routines • Analyze results from workouts and get feedback • Email results to physician or specialist
Prototype Demonstration • Development Platform • Built for PDA device for easy use in gym • Created using Visual Basic .NET • Supports Pocket PC 2002
Development Process • Created low-fidelity prototype • Conducted Usability Test • Revised prototype based on suggestions
Usability Test • Subjects • 8 total: 6 male, 2 female • Age Range: 19-39 • Workout Experience Range: 1 year to 20 years • Subjects tested one at a time and in isolation • Simulated on a computer (rather than PDA) • Simulated outside of the gym in rooms with noise levels variable to noise in a gym
Revisions • Modified navigation system to be action-oriented • Provided backward navigation for viewing/logging screens • Improved ease of use and program flow • Fixed minor technical issues
Conclusion • Some tasks ended up being too ambitious • Basic functionality is implemented • Storing results and analysis are still “in development” • The DPT has considered flaws in current products • We have maintained our focus of creating a user-centered and versatile device
Future Work and Goals • Complete and enhance current implementation • Add advanced features to the DPT: • Wireless capability • Web accessibility and workout database • Automated hints for workouts based on preferences • More research on creating customized workouts • More research on types of workout analyses and feedback methods
Acknowledgments • Thanks to all the following people who helped make the DPT a success: • Dr. Ben Shneiderman and Adam Perer • Kevin Tom, Kirt Fulcher, Mara Hemminger, Christine Hwang, and Rishi Gupta for their suggestions • All the subjects from our usability test
Questions • Any questions, comments, suggestions?
