How can increasing the awareness of college students on foreign and military affairs in the United States affect how we achieve international peace?
overview • Peacekeeping: "military operations undertaken with the consent of all major parties to a dispute, designed to monitor and facilitate implementation of an agreement (cease fire, truce, or other such agreement) and support diplomatic efforts to reach a long-term political settlement.” • Peace Enforcement: "application of military force, or the threat of its use, normally pursuant to international authorization, to compel compliance with resolutions or sanctions designed to maintain or restore peace and order."
Evolution of War Contributors to Change What does this mean? Growing disconnect between military action and civil society Society no longer feels the direct affects Less societal reluctance to go to war • Technological Advancements • Political Relations • Number of soldiers on the “front lines” • Internet
The Media Power of Public Opinion What does this mean? Society isn’t being well informed about what our military is doing Vietnam marks as the first and most intensively covered war in American history Example of the power of college students • News outlets rarely have sovereignty over what they do or do not cover, and how they cover it • The media only covers a small number of events, and covers it in a certain way as to sway public opinion
What Can we do next? • “Education is, quite simply, peacekeeping by another name” (Mwanza, n.d.) • How can education of our youth effect how our military operates? • How can increasing awareness of our college students effect how peacekeeping is executed in the future?
Methods • Students will be rating their awareness on the issue from one to ten, as well as rating the importance of the issue • Students will also be answering an open ended question about why or why not this topic should be discussed more (in schools, in media, etc.) • Students will finally answer a multiple choice question on their opinion on the best forms of keeping international peace
