Quotation Integration With Examples from Hosseini’sA Thousand Splendid Suns
Integrate quotations into your sentence. Try to *avoid* starting a sentence with a quotation, using artificial introductions like “For example,” or letting a quotation stand alone as a sentence. Also *do* include an explanation of why you included a quotation.
Avoid Starting A Sentence With A Quotation: Poor: “The room was reeling up and down, the ground shifting beneath her feet,” (46). This shows that… Better: When Hosseini says that “The room was reeling up and down, the ground shifting beneath her feet” (46), it shows that… Best: Hosseini describes how “The room was reeling up and down, the ground shifting beneath [Mariam’s] feet” (46),as she hears the news of her arranged marriage. This metaphor shows that…
Avoid Using Artificial Introductions: Poor: Mariam’s opinion of Jalil changes after he leaves her to sleep on the street. For example, “For the first time, Mariam could hear him with Nana’s ears” (38). This shows… Better: We can see the change in Mariam’s opinion of Jalil when she takes a cab ride with him: “For the first time, Mariam could hear him with Nana’s ears” (38). This shows…
When You Want to Modify A Quotation: Use “…” to show that you have excluded something. In your own notes, use this whenever you want, even if you just don’t feel like writing down the whole quotation. HOWEVER, if someone else is going to read it, only exclude things that are irrelevant! Use square brackets to show that you have modified something to make its meaning clearer or more grammatically correct. This is for minor modifications ONLY!
p. 59: Rasheed’s statement that he “can’t stand…the sound of a woman crying” and he “[has] no patience for it” suggests that he is cross for selfish reasons, not because he cares for her. Original quotation: “‘That’s one thing I can’t stand,’ he said, scowling, ‘the sound of a woman crying. I’m sorry. I have no patience for it.” (59)
In general, you use the present tense to discuss literature. • Examples: • Hosseini describes (not described) how Mariam “picked up ten pebbles and arranged them vertically” • Mariam thinks (not thought) that Nana’s death is her fault • …because she left her alone at the kolba to go to Herat • You can choose whether or not to alter the tense within the quotation to match yours:
p. 61: When Mariam “shook her head in what she recognized as her first lie in their marriage” I get the sense that there will be many more to come (foreshadowing). When Mariam “[shakes] her head in what she recognize[s] as her first lie in their marriage”…
