Introducing new areas of labor, e.g. informal and women sectors Activities/Campaigns: • Joint research on the situation (input from GUFs), profile case studies • Education campaigns and programs • making handouts on organizing the informal sector • seminars on specific issues (e.g. women, part-time workers) • workshops on new ways of organizing workers • training trainers/co-ordinators
1. Introducing new areas of labor, e.g. informal and women sectors Difficulties • Union assumptions of the “full-time male worker” model • Reaching the informal workers (how?) and addressing specific concerns • Transforming the concept of the trade union movement
2. Supporting unions in solidarity, e.g. union-busting, union making and the Freedom of Association issue Activities/Campaigns • Utilizing Framework Agreements/ILSs where appropriate • Create dialogue with GUFs and the employers’ associations • Making solidarity/support networks nationally and regionally • Resource centers on FAs and ILSs (advising and training in countries) • Workshops for unions organizing in difficult sectors/circumstances Difficulties • Creating a joint forum (why would employers want to work GUFs?) • Getting the right perspective
3. Organizing the Pacific (where the labor force is small and resources scarce) Activities/Campaigns • Getting agreement among the GUFs on how to organize the unions • Activities to support development and strengthening new unions (e.g. workshops, developing resources) Difficulties • Union rivalries, geographical difficulties (logistically and on solidarity among unions)
4. Child rights and managing Child Labor Activities/Campaigns • Setting joint guidelines on work for children (safe environment, education and working conditions that do not convene with the UNCRC) • Technical co-operation for understanding and implementation of guidelines • Joint research aiming to hear children’s voices and to incorporate children’s views in agreements and guidelines • Joint campaigns for the implementation of UNCRC (e.g. education, media) • Developing strategies on working with employers to address the issue in different countries Difficulties • Cultural/Economical difficulties (changing the community attitude) • Making a holistic approach (e.g. poverty)
5. HIV/AIDS and workers campaign Activities/Campaigns • Rising awareness among workers (prevention) • Education programs on STDs (producing resources) • Workshops on safe sex • Supporting workers with HIV/AIDS (social stigma) • Framework Agreements including social security clauses for workers with HIV/AIDS • Establishing regional guidelines with employer associations • Education campaigns targeted to unions Difficulties • Fighting with prejudice
