Different from/Different than • Basic Rule: Different from is preferred from different than. • Jingle: “Don’t say different than, or else you’ll be Dirty Dan!” • Ex. • Less acceptable: Generic eggnog is different than that of Manning’s. • Preferred: Generic eggnog is different from that of Manning’s.
Due to the fact that • Basic Rule: Replace with because or since. • Jingle: “Don’t say due to the fact that or I’ll kill your cat!” • Ex. • Less acceptable: There will be a snow day tomorrow due to the fact that there will be bad road conditions. • Preferred: There will be a snow day tomorrow because/since there will be bad road conditions.
Farther/Further • Basic Rule: Farther is used when referring to distance. Further is used when meaning “additional” or “to a greater degree or extent.” • Saying: You’re farther from the harbor and further from committing murder. • Ex: • Rudolph is farther away from Santa than Donner. • The elves arefurtheralong making the presents.
Immigrate/Emigrate • Basic Rule: Immigrate refers to entering a country for residency while emigrate refers to leaving a country for new residency. • Saying: Immigrate=In, Emigrate=Exit • Ex. • Santa immigrated to the North Pole from his former home. • Rudolph emigrated from Canada to the South Pole.
