  1. Copper Conundrum 6-7A Chemistry

  2. Purpose • Our purpose is to reclaim the greatest amount of copper possible from a solution of copper (II) chloride using a reaction involving aluminum. • We hypothesize that if we have the exact amount of aluminum needed, we should have no excess aluminum remaining in the solution, and we will have 100% yield of pure copper from our reaction.

  3. Preliminary Testing Aluminum Shot Aluminum Foil • Hypothesis: less surface area, slower reaction • Conclusion: slow and inefficient • Hypothesis: more surface area, quicker reaction • Conclusion: fast and efficient

  4. Procedure • Using DA, determine correct amounts for highest efficiency reaction • Carefully measure CuCl2 and Aluminum foil • Combine CuCl2 and Aluminum in beaker • Find the mass of filter paper • Filter through filter paper into Erlenmeyer flask • Wash the solid, and let it dry • Measure dry mass • Subtract mass of filter paper from dry mass

  5. Procedure: Visualized

  6. Measurements • 274.5 mLCuCl2 • 3.1 g Al • 0.9 g filter paper (average) • 7.5 g net dry mass • 5.6 g final dry mass of copper product

  7. Percent Yield 128.9%

  8. Analysis of Errors • Copper oxidation caused weight gain • Remnant aluminum particles • Dust, skin, hair

  9. Conclusion • Lack of sterile environment caused errors • Most efficient method of extracting copper from cupric (II) chloride • Fewer trials = less loss of product on equipment • Time/materials constraint
