  2. Objectives • We are presenting a PowerPoint on the USS Indianapolis because it played a large role in the turn out of WWII and we wish to inform you about it.

  3. Construction • November 15, 1932 • Commissioned in Philadelphia Navy yard • 9,800 tons and 610 feet long

  4. Last Journey • July 16, 1945 • Began voyage from San Francisco to Tinian • 5,000 mile trip to island near Japan

  5. Cargo • Carried components for two atomic bombs • Uranium - 235

  6. Journey cont. • July 26, 1945 • Continues its trip by heading to Guam

  7. Journey • July 28, 1945 • Leaves Guam and heads for the Philippines • 1,500 miles from Guam

  8. Journey • July 29, 1945 • Captain ceased use of “zigzagging” • Zigzagging - Used to evade any exposure to the enemy

  9. Sunk • July 30, 1945 • Japanese torpedoes hit the cruiser • Sunk in 12 minutes with 300 men still in the ship • 900 men were dumped into the Pacific

  10. Sunk • July 30, 1945 • No distress signal was sent because the mission was top secret
