Information About Painting • Title: View of Toledo • Artist: El Greco • Date of Composition: 1599-1600 • Artistic Era: Mannerist (Baroque)
Why I chose this Painting • This painting intrigues me in many ways. It is a painting of Toledo, which is where some of my relatives live. Also, the dark contrast of colors makes the painting have an inner soul both evil and calm. There is a storm with light rays peeking through, while the ground is a bright green rather than a darker green. This may symbolize that even in the midst of a storm, hope and light can be found.
Information About Painting • Title: African Beach • Artist: Maria Fortuny • Date of Composition: 1867 • Artisitic Era: Romanticism
Why I Chose this Painting • I am drawn to this painting because of its setting. The beach is one of my favorite places to be. Although the paintings colors appear dull and displeasing, there is a hidden relaxed mood. Waves in the background, a person staring out into the vast ocean, and clouds all give you the feeling that something about the painting is reassuring and unassuming.
Information About the Painting • Title: The Flower of Life • Artist: Frida Kahlo • Date of Composition: 1944 • Artistic Era: Surrealism
Why I Chose this Painting • This painting is particularly unique. The warm and bright sparks of colors carefully placed throughout the flower give the illusion that the painting may be coming to life. This perfectly fits the name, and gives an accurate representation of how life grows beautifully in many diverging directions. The veins coursing through the flower are filled with the happiness and joys of life itself.
