What are Indulgences? • An Indulgence is given to someone who perform a certain task. It grants remission of temporal punishment for sins already forgiven through the Sacrament of Penance. • Temporal punishment refers to Purgatory as opposed to eternal punishment which is hell, and which is for those whose sins have not been forgiven .
Five principles behind the teaching on Indulgences: • Sin Results in Guilt and Punishment • Punishments are Both Temporal and Eternal • Temporal Penalties May Remain When a Sin is Forgiven • God Sometimes Blesses Some People As a Reward to Others • God Can Remit Temporal Punishments through the Church
Catechism of the Catholic Church "An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishment due for their sins." The Church does this not just to aid Christians, "but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and charity" (CCC 1478).
Conditions to Obtain an Indulgence • Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; • Have sacramentally confessed their sins; • Receive the Holy Eucharist • Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. • It is sufficient that these sacred rites andprayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgencedact.
