IEEE Transactions on Automation Science & Engineering Editorial Board Meeting at IROS September 29, 2011
Mission Statement Automation plays an increasingly important role in the global economy and in our daily lives. Engineers strive to combine automated devices with mathematical and organizational tools to create complex systems for a rapidly expanding range of applications and human activities. To meet these challenges, we will establish a major archival journal on Automation Science & Engineering to publish the abstractions, algorithms, theory, methodologies, models, systems, and case studies that can be applied across industries to significantly advance efficiency, quality productivity, and reliability for society.

PRAC Review Committee Remarks This is a relatively recently established journal (2004). The number of submissions is relatively small (180 papers/year) and constant. After 7 years, the journal is barely financially positive, partly based on industry donations. The impact factor is relatively low (1.47). Industry participation is considered low(1 AE; previously 5 AEs). Compared to other RAS journals, this transactions could have more submissions from Region 8. The journal has currently a long queue (7 months from submission to acceptance, 15 months from submission to print), but it was mentioned that in 2011 the queue will be reduced by adding 200 pages (1 additional issue, about 20 papers) to the page budget.
PRAC Review Committee Remarks, cont’d Best practices identified are: • A good process for approving proposals for special issues (involving the Editors). • A good process for appointing new AEs (involving the Editors). • AEs are obliged to summarize the reviewer remarks and identify clearly what needs to be addressed in the revision.
AE Areas of Expertise* *Only includes the information of AEs who have responded up to Sept. 21, 2011
