  2. Procedure • Isolate the variable by performing the inverse operation on the number that is attached to the variable. • The inverse of multiplication is division. The inverse of division is multiplication. • Use the “Golden Rule.” Perform the same operation on the other side of the equal sign.

  3. Example m ÷ 3 = 10 The inverse of division is multiplication. x 3 x 3 Repeat the operation on the other side. 30 m =

  4. Check. Use the original equation. m ÷ 3 = 10 30 ÷ 3 = 10 10 = 10

  5. Example 2 The inverse of multiplying is dividing. 7b = 105 ÷ 7 ÷ 7 1 5 105 7 b = 15 7 3 5 35 0

  6. Check 7b = 105 7(15) = 105 105 = 105
