Satire- definition • Satire: Literary style in which vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings are condemned by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods, often to bring about improvement. • Satire: Laugh = Think
What does Satire attack? • Satire generally attacks two areas: • Human folly (Characteristics) • Contemporary Issues • Remember, if you laugh or think “what…” the author has completed his/her mission
Elements of Satire: • Underlying protest/complaint/criticism • Use of illusion, analogy, familiarity • Biting wit or glaring idiocy • Symbolism • Shock value • Verbal/visual humor/irony • No “official” style or genre
Two types of Satire: • Horatian satire: Satire which is gentle, tolerant, amused and witty. It’s absurd- you smile when you read it, but it’s not done to inspire anger
Two types of Satire: • Juvenalian satire: Satire which is bitter and biting. It’s formal and expresses contempt and indignation. It may attack actual people- harsh.
