Course Tools • All of the CS101 course tools are located under the Course Tools tab on the main website • Attendance Recording • Grade Sheet • Assignment Submission Tool • You will use your MyID to login to the website
Course Tools - Attendance • To record your attendance each day, use the Record Attendance link on the course tools site • You will be asked to solve a CAPTCHA before you can press the submit button • Click on the human faces only
Course Tools - Grades • You may view your grades at any time during the semester by using the Gradebook link • Homework and Exam grades will be posted as soon as I grade them (Usually within a day or two) • MyITLab grades will be updated periodically through the semester
Course Tools – Assignment Submissions • Click the Submit Assignment link • Choose the assignment you wish to submit something for • Click the Browse… button • Select which file you wish to upload • Press the Submit Assignment button • If everything is ok, you’ll get a confirmation
“Make it go!“ • Most students will encounter at least one period of frustration during this course • Don’t Panic! • How you choose to deal with the stress of not understanding something will define you as a student • Long, vocal sighs accompanied by flailing arms • Calm acknowledgement of ignorance followed the pursuit of help!
Textbook • If you purchased the textbook, it would be a good idea to use it! • If you did not purchase the book, you can still use one of our many copies down in Open Lab • You can’t borrow them • Sections with yellow pages provide step-by-step instructions on how to perform specific tasks within Microsoft Office
Find-It Guides • Located at http://cs101.wvu.edu/resources/homework/find-it-guides/ • Tailored to each of the six homework assignments in the class. • They provide a bank of resources for you to check if you get stuck
Internet Searching Tips • “Google is your friend!” • The internet is a great resource for information • Fast • Vast
Internet Searching Tips • Search for the technical name of the topic you’re interested in • “Dollar sign thingies” vs “Excel referencing types” • Include the name of the program in your search query • “Pivot Tables Excel 2010” vs “Pivot Tables” • Site search using the “site:” keyword in your search • Allows you to search a specific site for information • Useful if you find a really well written help site and want to acquire more information from it • You can find information on the CS101 site using this operator! • More operators and tricks located at http://support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=136861
Youtube • Not just for hilarious videos of cats and things! • Use the same searching tips from the previous slides • You will get a mix of amateur and professional help videos • Useful if you miss a class and need to catch up • Also good to have a different point of view on the same topic • When you’re done you can watch hilarious cat videos! • CS101 specific videos also available here: • http://cs101.wvu.edu/resources/
