Perfect Squares Numbers like 9, 16, and 225 are called square numbers or perfect squares because they are squares of whole numbers! 10 x 10 = 100 ( 100 is a perfect square because it is the square of 10) 7 x 7 = 49 (49 is a perfect square because it is the square of 7) Can you think of another perfect square?
Square Roots The factors multiplied to form perfect squares are called square roots. A radical sign , is the symbol used to indicate the square root of a number! 42 = 4 x4 = 16, so = 4 16 Read as: the square root of 16 equals 4 The square root of a number is one of its two equal factors. When dealing with square roots just think: “What number times itself will equal the number inside the radical sign!”
Square Roots Find the (read as “square root of 25” 25 5 x 5 = 25 so the square root of 25 = 5 Think: what number times itself equals 81? Find the 81 9 x 9 = 81 so the square root of 81 is 9 900 Find the 30 x 30 = 900 so the square root of 900 = 30
