Reasons for Scores of Incomplete Strand was scored “M” because: • More than one skill was assessed • Same skill was not assessed on at least 8 dates on data chart. • One or more activity on data chart did not match measurable outcome (i.e., a different skill was assessed). 4) Activities did not match the measurable outcome. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Avoiding Scores of Incomplete • 5)Brief descriptions lacked clarity and specificity. • These must describe how student addressed the measurable outcome and/or what student was asked to do. • Data chart started at or above 80% accuracy and 80% independence. • Data and/or evidence was dated on weekend, holiday, or school vacation. 11 Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Transition to the 2011 Curriculum Frameworks • In 2012-2013, MCAS-Alt will assess the 2011 Mathematics standards for students in grades 3-8 only. • High school Math remains the same as last year for MCAS-Alt • Use 2006 Resource Guide – choice of three strands • ELA and Science and Technology/Engineering will remain the same as 2011-2012 Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Organization of the PreK–Grade 8 Mathematics Standards • 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks = Common Core State Standards + Unique MA Standards • Domains, instead of Strands • Domainsbegin and end in different grades • In previous framework, Math Strands extended from preK to grade 12 • Clusters – Groups of related standards (like “topics”) • Cluster headings describe the big idea(s) within each cluster • Replaces “Essence” in the new Math Resource Guide Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Mathematics “Domains” and Grades in Which They Are Taught KEY MA = Unique Massachusetts standards added to the Common Core State Standards = Assessed by MCAS-Alt

Sample page from 2012 Resource Guide for Mathematics (Entry Points and Access Skills)
Features of the 2012 Math Resource Guide • Less duplication and repetition of Entry Points • “Address entry points in an earlier grade in a related cluster in this domain” • Entry points are listed as single skills. • Individualize as needed to create measurable outcomes • New RG provides many sample activities (“e.g.,…”) to illustrate and model the standard • Low entry points were identified even for domains that begin at higher grades • Access skills are listed (as before) at the lowest grade in a domain. Resources • 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks at http://www.doe.mass.edu/frameworks/current.html • Glossaryof terms • PreK–Grade 8 Mathematics Crosswalk at www.doe.mass.edu/candi/commoncore/0111mathcrosswalk.xls • Compares the 2011 and 2000/2004 Massachusetts Standards for Mathematics • “Unpacking the Standards” at www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/common-core-tools/#unmath • Discusses the meaning of the standard and gives examples Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Storage and Destruction of Portfolios See Pg. 5, 2013 Educator’s Manual for MCAS-Alt • Portfolios returned to your school become part of the student’s temporary record. • Temporary records must be destroyed within 7 years after student transfers or graduates/exits. • However, temporary records may be destroyed whenever they become “dated, irrelevant, or misleading.” • Parent must be notified and given opportunity to receive materials prior to their destruction. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Storage and Destruction (Continued) • Department suggests the following retention schedule for returned portfolios, since they would have likely become “dated and irrelevant” • Grades 3-8 ELA and Math: 2 years after return • Grades 5 STE: 3 years after return • Grades 8 STE: 2 years after return • All high school portfolios: 2 years after student exits …after which parent must be notified of date of destruction and given the materials. • If parent doesn’t want, or student is no longer in district, portfolio(s) may be destroyed. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
