Demographic Reality >300,000 Pacific people (June 2007 est); projected to grow to 480,000 in 2026 Median age 21.1 years cf 35.9 years (NZ) 38% under 15 years cf 22% (NZ) 60% NZ-born NZ population ageing – 65 years + = 10% (1985), 12% (2006), 26% (2051)
Pacific people in New Zealand 10,040 babies born in New Zealand to the year ending June 2008 were of Pacific origin. 13% of mothers and 25% of babies identified with more than one ethnic group One half of Pacific babies belonged to multi ethnic groups
NZ Workforce 1 in 20 workers are Pacific currently 1 in 6 workers will be Pacific in 40 years Educational outcomes for Pacific young people improving but more/better is needed Increasing dependency on smaller (ageing) workforce Auckland City Council predict labour shortages

Conclusions • Cultural diversity is real • Pacific peoples are integral to NZ’s development and Pacific identity • Challenge is how to make diversity work for NZ as a whole
