  3. Location and Population • 800,000 individuals • Antarctica • South Georgia, Shetland, Sandwhich, Orkney Islands • New Zealand • Australia

  4. Annual Life Cycle • Sept. – Nov. Peak pupping period • Lactation period lasts 50 days • Pups moult at 6 weeks old • Nov. – Dec. Females and males mate • Dec. – March Molting period

  5. Breeding • Stable fast ice or shore ice • Usually one pup at a time • Males defend underwater territories • Stay close toprevious breedingcolonies • Mating takes place underwater

  6. Diet • Krill • Fish – mainly Atlantic Cod • Cephalopods – squid and octopi Major Threats • Killer Whales • Leapard Seals
