VCMC Core Mission • Supported by 23 full time personnel • Special Workers – two to four, Intern Program - six
VCMC • The East Volusia Anti-Mosquito District formed in a local “Lions” club and passed by the State Legislature on June 11, 1937. • Intent is to contend with massive influxes of salt marsh produced mosquitoes. • The entire 500+ square mile district was covered with a five (5) man crew.

VCMC WPA workers dig miles of ditches by hand. 1940’s/1950’s: draglines and dynamite used. District purchased its first aircraft in 1949.
VCMC Early 1960’s: still using fixed wing aircraft for surveillance and treatment. DDT phased out in the mid 1960’s.
Integrated Pest Management Program(IPM) • Surveillance driven as mandated by Florida State Law: Chapter 388, F.S. and FL Administrative Code 5E-13. • Source Reduction – from “Tip and/or Toss” to salt marsh work with equipment. • Biological control – fish propagation and “seeding”. • Larviciding and Adulticiding. • Community Outreach and Public Education.
