Timeline (to presidency) • Born in a log cabin at Cove Gap, near Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on April 23, 1791 • Fought in the defense of Baltimore during the War of 1812 • Buchanan began his political career in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1814–1816, serving as a Federalist. • Buchanan was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill a vacancy and served from December 1834; he was reelected in 1837 and 1843, and resigned in 1845 • Served as Secretary of State under James K. Polk 1845 to 1849. • Elected to presidency in the Election of 1856
Pre-Civil War inaction • James Buchanan, a supporter of slavery, deemed it illegal to declare war on the seceding Southern states (despite the fact that he also saw secession as illegal). • He is often considered one of the worst presidents in American history, criticized for his inability to prevent the impending Civil War.
Opinion • Buchanan's reputation is judged mainly by his conduct during the last months of his presidency, and he is therefore generally regarded as an ineffective executive. In his defense it can be said that he was a lame-duck president caught in a vicious crossfire between secessionists and Republicans.
