General • 5 paragraphs • First and last paragraph need to be at least 4 sentences. • The three middle paragraphs need to be at least 6 sentences
MLA format • 1 inch margins • 12 points Times New Roman Font • Double spaced • Header (In upper right hand corner) last name and page number
Name and Title • Left side margin- List: • Your Name • English 11 • Mrs. Nichols • Date • Date should be listed- 16 July 2008 • Center Title- Title should be no more than 6 words. • Do not put your title in bold, increase the font, underline, or put it in quotes.
Things to Avoid • The word “You” and “I.” Do not refer to yourself in this paper. • Contractions such as- doesn’t, couldn’t, etc. • The phrase- “In this paper” or “In this paragraph” or “This paper will…”
Quotes • Your paper must include at least 3 quotes. • Be sure to cite your quote. • For example- “This is my quote” (Hansberry 63). • Be sure to explain your quote and how it relates to your topic
Introduction • The last sentence of your introduction should be your thesis statement. • Remember, a thesis is one sentence that tells me what the entire paper is going to be about • Do not use the sentence- “This paper is going to be about…” • Your introduction should also contain your blueprints.
Conclusion • Your conclusion should wrap up your paper • It should not introduce new ideas, but summarize what you have discussed. • The conclusion should also contain a reworded thesis statement.
