Reading Expectations • Begin to decode words automatically and read fluently • Make predictions about a book based on the setting described in the opening • Talk about and infer what characters might be thinking or feeling using clues in the text • Discuss why certain words or phrases make a story funny, scary or exciting • Identify some features of different texts and understand different purposes • Pick out words the author has chosen to use and discuss their meaning • Become increasingly familiar with a wider range of stories, fairy stories and traditional stories • Retell a wider range of stories and continue to build up a repertoire of poems learnt by heart • Pick out and discuss favourite words and sentences

6. Writing Expectations • Use commands, statements, questions and exclamative sentences in their writing. • Proof read, edit and evaluate writing and its effect on the reader • Extend sentences using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions (eg. and, but, so, because, if, when) • Use commas in lists • Use apostrophes to show possession and omission • Add –ing and –ed to words ending in –y • Spell phonically plausible words with increasing accuracy • Join handwriting using horizontal and diagonal strokes

Maths Expectations • Recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number • Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100 • Add and subtract: a two-digit number and ones, a two-digit number and tens, two two-digit numbers and add 3 single digit numbers • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers • Solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts • Recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3, ¼, 2/4 and ¾ of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity • Recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value • Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour

8. Homework Children will receive a selection of homework tasks each half term. The children Over the half term, the children need to earn 6 points. The homework they complete is up to them. They could choose three blue 2 point homework, or two pink 3 point homework, or six yellow 1 point homework or any combination to make 6 points.

9. Homework continued Children are not expected to complete homework on their own and it is a chance for you to get to know what your child has been learning about during the week. Homework will be on the Penguin’s page on the school website. Spellings may also be sent depending on their phonics phase.

11. Attendance Matters Last year attendance figures for the school were the lowest for ten years [94%] and below the national average [96%]. This had a negative impact on the learning, progress and social development for some children and classes. If a child has an attendance figure of 90% in the year they miss the equivalent of ½ day of school each week, four weeks over the year, and half a year over five years. This has an enormous impact on a child’s development. Research links low attendance to lower GCSE scores. 90% of young people with absence rates below 85% fail to achieve five or more good GCSE grades. There are 190 statutory days in one school year – leaving 175 days available for holidays, family time, appointments, visits and so on………. Please can you help to ensure our attendance figures improve this year. Our target for the school this year is 96%

12. Attendance Matters Lateness In addition, please can we ask for your help to ensure all children arrive at school for an 8.50am start. This is when the whistle is blown. Arriving just five minutes late a day equates to the following – 25 minutes lost over one week, 1 hour 40 minutes lost a month, 5 hours lost a term [a whole day], 16 hours and 15 minutes lost in a school year. [equivalent to three days]. 10 minutes late a day equates to losing just over six full days of school a year. Children who arrive late, disrupt a smooth start to the day. It impacts on learning, as learning begins straight away. Punctuality and good attendance will greatly help your children prepare for high school and working life beyond. Thank you for your help with this.

13. Key Events Autumn • Visit from Cheshire Fire Brigade Spring • Burwardsley – a meeting for parents will be arranged nearer the time for more information • Forest Schools • Summer • SATs – taken in May. Children complete spelling and grammar, maths and reading papers.
