  1. EMMA Design Review 10.12.07 Injection Line Bruno Muratori, Daresbury; Carol Johnstone, Fermilab

  2. Design – several options considered • Exit ERLP at 10 to 20 MeV • Diagnose beam as fully as possible before EMMA • Emittance measurement quad scan / tomography • Bunch length / Energy spread / Current • Control beam as injection parameters very tight • EMMA Twiss parameters now known but variable • Depend on energy • Depend on kicker settings • Flexible matching required

  3. ERLP NOT to scale & for illustration only ... especially angles ! ERLP quadrupoles SRS quadrupoles EMMA PITZ type quadrupoles

  4. Extra dipole ERLP straight ahead ? ERLP quadrupoles SRS quadrupoles EMMA PITZ type quadrupoles ? quadrupoles

  5. EMMA LAYOUT

  6. EMMA ERLP Designed to include vacuum window emittance measurement

  7. EMMA TOMO Matching for 10 MeV

  8. Easier to match • reverse line • All dipoles rectangular • Match into tomography • section

  9. Tomography • 60° phase advance / screen (minimum possible) • Keeps Twiss parameters low & under control • Three OTRs or YAG screens

  10. ERLP EMMA

  11. Twiss parameters details Only one setting looked at, others may be worse ... ?

  12. INJECTION LINE In ERLP New Dipoles x 2 (32.5°) & BPMs at dipole entrance Spectrometer Screen & Faraday cup Screen x 3 - Tomography Section Screen & BPM Wall Current Monitor New Quadrupoles x 11 Screen & Vert. Slit New Dipole 30° & BPM at dipole entrance Vacuum valve Screen Bunch length measurement Kicker Kicker SRS Quadrupoles x 6 Septum 72° ERLP Faraday Cup Vacuum valve EMMA New Dipole 30° OTR Screen in ERLP Quadrupoles x 2 in ERLP ERLP

  13. Injection line – conclusions / questions • All dipoles rectangular • Match much easier without vacuum window • Longer tomography section ? 45° phase advance ? • Maybe use more SRS quadrupoles ? • Match into EMMA once exact Twiss parameters known at all energies required • More quadrupoles for safety in matching ? • Does this injection line do everything we want ? • Diagnostics sufficient ? • S2E required for whole of EMMA ?
